World-class experiential learning through simulations

Project Details

In 2018, Andre Wright, Chief Academic Officer of Aurora Public Schools (APS), attended a session at the Professional Learning Conference Center and learned that AI and VR had matured to a point of successfully engaging with sectors outside of Fortune 500 organizations, such as education. He saw an opportunity to employ this cutting edge technology as a potential solution to the challenges his teaching partners were facing. His research led him to Mursion, which at time was mostly being used in pre-service programs within universities. He immediately saw the opportunity beyond these pre-professional classrooms and started to build a partnership for APS.

OUTCOMES: Four customized scenarios have been developed, and over 40 simulations have been delivered. At least 31 teachers have engaged in the cycle at more than 10 schools over the course of the study. The principal turnover rate for 2017-18 was 31% and in 2018-19, the turnover rate dropped to 20%, the first year APS implemented Mursion.

Many of the initial goals of the project were achieved: creating motivated engagement, seeing a new openness in their participants to challenge themselves and self reflect deeply, as well as generating excitement for the product and the program.

So don’t underestimate the kind suspension of disbelief that happens with immersion… that’s what makes the learning so powerful and engaging and that’s what also leads to transfer because the world that you’re transferring from is very similar to the real world that you’re going to be in.”
